Statewide Awards Go to NEOMED’s Ignite Magazine
The Press Club of Cleveland awarded Ignite nine prizes at its 2020 All Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards ceremony, including second place in the Best Trade Publication in Ohio category. In their comments, naming Ignite second to first-place Hathaway Brown School, the judges noted, “Great content. Crisply edited. Tough call on this one.”
The magazine took awards in categories of medical/health writing; headline writing; essay; covers; general features; feature trends; and columns. It competed with newspapers, magazines, television and radio newscasts, and websites from around the state, as well as within the trade publication category. Content from its Spring 2019 and Fall 2019 issues of Ignite competed with more than 600 entries received for this year’s contest.
Elaine Guregian is the editor and Scott J. Rutan is the publication designer of Ignite, which is published twice a year by the Office of Marketing and Communications, led by Roderick L. Ingram Sr., vice president of marketing and communications. Contributing editors are Ingram, along with marketing and communications staff members Samantha Hickey and Jared Slanina.
Illustrations for the magazine are commissioned from artists with affiliations at NEOMED partner schools. The winning covers this year were created by artists Dave Szalay, an associate professor at the UA Myers School of Art, and UA Myers School graduate Elise Radzialowski.
Faculty member Julie Aultman, Ph.D., who directs the Medical Ethics and Humanities Program in the College of Graduate Studies, was honored for her article about the unmet health care needs of refugees.
Winning articles written by Guregian highlighted research by Merri Rosen, Ph.D., director of the Hearing Research Group at NEOMED – along with programs that provide diabetes care in NEOMED’s Student-Run Free Clinic and that divert people with severe mental health problems toward treatment – and away from incarceration.
2020 College of Medicine graduate Renee Brumbaugh, M.D., shared honors with Guregian in the Department or Column category, for which two articles were submitted. Brumbaugh wrote about the healing powers of reflection and Guregian spoke to NEOMED students about lessons learned from a poverty simulation program.
Judges remarked about Ingram’s winning headline for his article on the high infant mortality rate in the Black population, “Very clever. Nice play on words and will draw readers into the article.”
