NEOMED Increases Access and Affordability to Education with Education for Service Scholarships

Improving the health, economy, and quality of life in Northeast Ohio through the medical, pharmacy, and health sciences education of students is the mission of NEOMED and one way the University is furthering this mission is through its Education for Service scholarship program.

After taking office in 2010, President Jay A. Gershen, D.D.S., Ph.D., donated $100,000 to help jump start this new program that would allow partners and donors to address the primary care needs of the underserved communities while developing a diverse health care workforce. Five years later, six scholarships for the Education for Service scholarship program are now available to students due to innovative partnerships and generous donors. These scholarships, which may be designed for medicine or pharmacy students, or both, will allow them to give back to their community by working in an underserved urban or rural area in Northeast Ohio in exchange for each year they received tuition support.

Choose Ohio First Primary Care Scholarship
The Choose Ohio First Primary Care Scholarship is funded by the State of Ohio and provides $30,000 per year to offset tuition costs. Recipients must commit to practicing primary care in Ohio for no less than five years.

David and Inez Myers Foundation Scholarship
The David and Inez Myers Foundation scholarship provides students in the NEOMED-CSU Partnership for Urban Health program with a scholarship of $25,000 per year. In exchange for the scholarship, the recipients practice one year as a primary care physician in an underserved community in Northeast Ohio for every year of scholarship awarded.

Mercy Health Education for Service Scholarship
The Mercy Health Education for Service Scholarship provides full annual tuition and fees plus a $15,000 annual stipend for medical students. Recipients must provide one year of service through employment by Mercy Health in primary care, general surgery and other needed specialty in underserved, rural and disadvantaged communities served by Mercy Health for each year of scholarship awarded.

National Health Service Corps (NHSC)
The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is committed to improving the health of the nation’s underserved.  Communities, health care facilities, health professionals, the Ohio Department of Health Primary Care Office, and the NHSC work together to increase access to care in the state of Ohio through scholarships, students to service, and loan repayment programs.
