Developing More Accurate Diagnostic Tools for Hearing Loss
There are no effective clinical diagnostic tests for newly discovered cochlear synaptopathy — or hidden hearing loss — which can occur in both noise-induced or age-related hearing loss.
In a recent article published in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Jianxin Bao, Ph.D., professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology, and Kelly C. Harris, Ph.D., Medical University of South Carolina, identify news ways to develop those diagnostic tools.
“Cochlear synaptopathy could lead to accelerated age-related hearing loss and tinnitus, as well as perception problems under noise,” notes Dr. Bao. “This review suggested a clear path to develop new diagnostic tools to fill this unmet need.”
