Better COVID-19 Care Needed for Rural Populations

Gaps in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 in rural populations have become apparent as the pandemic continues. 

Donald Voltz, M.D., an associate professor of anesthesiology with board certification in healthcare informatics, is a physician at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio. Dr. Voltz recently co-authored a guest editorial on the topic with Eric Tran, M.S., of the Tulane School of Medicine, published in Healthcare Business and Technology.

“Preventive care targeting patients with pre-conditions in rural locations is severely lacking in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic,” write the authors. They suggest that coupling Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) preventive care initiatives with telehealth services could help rural hospitals to improve the standard of care.
