Best of Show Trade Publication: Ignite Wins Statewide SPJ Honors
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) in Ohio has named Ignite magazine as the best trade publication in Ohio. The “Best of Show” award and others from SPJ’s annual Ohio’s Best Journalism Contest will be presented at an event in Cincinnati Saturday., Oct. 2., hosted by the Cincinnati Chapter of SPJ.
The annual competition honors excellence and achievement in print, broadcast, digital, trade, freelance and college journalism. It is co-sponsored by the SPJ chapters of Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati. Awards were made for work produced during the 2020 calendar year.
In June, Ignite also won first place for Best Trade Publication in Ohio in the Press Club of Cleveland’s 2021 All Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest – the first year that the magazine has won first place in that category in both contests.
Ignite won three additional awards in this year’s SPJ contest, for entries in medical/science writing; cover design; and feature story designs.
Genes or Environment? Both, which won a second-place award in the medical or science story category, presents insights from Parkinson’s research conducted by Sheila Fleming, Ph.D., director of the Neurodegenerative Disease and Aging Research Focus Area.
The artists who created the winning cover designs and illustrations for the feature stories noted below are all either faculty or alumni of the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art of the University of Akron, a NEOMED partner school.
