An Anesthesiologist on a Mission to Replace Opioids

Can large, steady doses of Tylenol and Motrin replace oxycodone for new mothers after C-sections? Eric Chiang, M.D. (’03), thinks so.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Chiang, an anesthesiologist at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, explains that hospitals often make opioids readily available for new mothers – and  why he began to focus on reducing use of the narcotics.

According to a recent study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, nearly one in 300 women who take opioids for the first time after a C-section will become persistent opioid users.
