Disability

Long-Term Disability Insurance: UNUM

Long-term disability insurance provides income protection if you are unable to work for an extended period of time due to an illness or injury.  Our program offers two options: the base plan of 60% of monthly earnings after six months (University provided) or a buy up plan of 60% of monthly earnings after three months.  The maximum benefit is $10,000 per month.  An employee must exhaust their paid leave time (sick, vacation or compensatory), with the exception of two weeks of vacation, before payments begin.

Long-term disability has a “pre-existing condition” exclusion.  A pre-existing condition means a sickness or injury for which you have received treatment within three months before your effective date.  Any disability contributed to or caused by a pre-existing condition within the first twelve months of your effective date will not be covered.

Cost

Employer pays for the base plan; employee pays the difference in cost if they choose the buy up plan.

Short-Term Disability Insurance: UNUM

This program provides protection from total loss of salary in the event an employee is temporarily disabled because of illness or off-the-job injury.  Benefits begin 16 days after an accident or 31 days after a medical emergency.

Employees must exhaust all their sick and compensatory leave balances before disability benefits begin.  The employee may retain up to 80 hours of vacation leave.  The protection offered by this coverage is 50% of an employee’s wage or salary, to a maximum of $1,200 per week.

Short-term disability has a “pre-existing condition” exclusion.  A pre-existing condition means a sickness or injury for which you have received treatment within 12 months before your effective date.  Any disability contributed to or caused by a pre-existing condition within the first 12 months of your effective date will not be covered.

Cost

Premiums are 100% paid by employee and are taken on an after-tax basis.
