Biography
Paul J. Hartung, Ph.D., is professor and vice chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University, where he directs the College of Medicine’s first-year course in the psychosocial foundations of clinical medicine.
He has over 60 articles, 38 book chapters, four edited books, and an h-index of 40, reflecting high productivity and impact of his work. He has 200 international, national, and state presentations, including keynote addresses and workshops delivered on four continents.
He is past editor for The Career Development Quarterly (2014-21) and past president, Division 16 (2022-26) of the International Association of Applied Psychology.
He currently serves on five journal editorial boards and is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, IAAP, and the National Career Development Association.
For lifetime achievement, he received the NCDA Eminent Career Award and the APA Society for Vocational Psychology Distinguished Contributions Award.
Area of Expertise/Research Interests
Dr. Hartung studies work and career in human life, with emphases on physician careers and specialty choice, work-life balance, career decision-making, work values, and career construction theory and practice. He is interested in how people (a) explore, choose, and adjust to work over the life span, (b) use work to shape their identities and advance their life stories, and (c) navigate and balance work along with roles in non-work spheres of life, such as family, play, and community.
