Growing healthier communities

    The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) was created by Congress in 1971 to encourage medical schools to increase the number of students and residents trained in underserved community-based settings. Through a combination of federal, state and local funding, NEOMED established the Northeast Ohio AHEC to foster collaboration between academic health centers and community organizations.

Focusing on health professional shortage areas and medically underserved populations, Northeast Ohio AHEC through regional centers:

• develop and support community-based education for medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, and other students; meet continuing education needs for a broad array of health professionals;
• recruit under-represented and disadvantaged persons into health careers; conduct health promotion and disease prevention programs; and
• assist communities in recruiting and training health providers.

The AHEC program is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of an award totaling $1,185,928 with 50% percent financed with non-governmental sources.
