NEOMED’s Virtual Commencement Wins Honors from CASE District V

A virtual Commencement that judges called “tear-inducing” and “really cool” has won two awards for the Northeast Ohio Medical University Commencement Committee from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

The NEOMED 2020 Commencement won Bronze awards in both the Communications Pivot category and the Special Event Pivot category of The Pride of CASE District V Awards Program. As a university in District V (the Great Lakes region), NEOMED competed with higher education institutions in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Writing about NEOMED’s entry in the Special Event Pivot category, judges wrote, “Really unique event! Watching the recording was tear-inducing. The split screen was a really cool way to involve the students and their families, and a great way to pivot during these times.”

Led by Sandra Emerick, Ed.D., senior executive director, Academic Affairs and Student Services, the Commencement Committee included representatives throughout the University who collaborated on a shared goal of making Commencement an exceptional student experience for 2020 graduates, despite a national pandemic.

Other winners in the Communications Pivot category were The Ohio State University, Washington University in St. Louis, Central Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Other winners in the Special Event Pivot category were Midwestern University, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Central Michigan University.

CASE is dedicated to educational advancement. Through its awards programs, it recognizes those who share the goal of championing education to transform lives and society.

The nomination criteria for the “Pivot” categories stated, “Everyone having to work in educational advancement had to pivot in some way during 2020 in order to adapt and respond to the unfolding COVID-19 global pandemic. In recognition of these unique and extreme efforts, CASE has created special “Pivot” categories to recognize the most creative and successful ways that our members adjusted. In many cases, their ingenuity has resulted in new and better ways of operating that will continue long after the crisis.”
