COVID-19’s Risks to Pregnant Women
Pregnant woman are at “significantly higher risk” for severe outcomes from COVID-19 compared with nonpregnant women, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report discussed in Yahoo Sports.
The CDC report looks at data from 400,000 women aged 15-44 years with symptomatic COVID-19. The study took place from Jan. 22-Oct. 3, 2020.
Yahoo Sports interviewed experts including Richard Watkins, M.D., an infectious disease physician and professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University, about the report. Dr. Watkins advised that pregnant women take active measures to avoid contracting the virus. For example, he said, “In-person baby showers should not happen under current circumstances.”
