Research, Entrepreneurship, Discovery & Innovation Zone
In addition to providing companies with physical space and resources to develop their ideas, The REDIzone facilitates interactions with NEOMED’s researchers to assist in collaborative discovery or technical assistance. NEOMED has organized its research activities along six core areas and recruited the leading researchers in each field to lead the research that will advance the future of health care.
The Community-Based Mental Health Research Focus Area is a collaborative, trans-institutional, and interdisciplinary team of researchers in Northeast Ohio. The team includes researchers in the fields of sociology, psychology, public health, psychiatry, family medicine and pharmacy practice who serve as faculty and staff at NEOMED, Kent State University, Hiram College and The University of Akron and Case Western Reserve University.
Diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, and atherosclerosis are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems. Researchers in the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Research Focus Area aim to build a collaborative internationally-recognized Center of Excellence in diabetes, obesity and metabolism.
Hearing disorders of many types begin in the inner ear but have long-term effects in the brain. The Hearing Research Focus Area at NEOMED seeks to deepen the understanding of how the central nervous system functions in association with hearing, communication and swallowing, how it is affected by hearing disorders, and how manipulation of the central nervous systems may improve these disorders.
Diseases of the heart and blood vessels are the number one cause of death and every 30 seconds an individual in the U.S. dies from heart and vascular diseases. The risk of developing heart and vascular diseases is greatly increased by diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. The Heart and Blood Vessel Disease Research Focus Area at NEOMED seeks to understand these diseases with an ultimate goal of curing them.
Focused on developing bone and tissue regrowth processes to address the needs of our aging population with debilitating conditions such as arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis and bone fractures. The Musculoskeletal Research Focus Area at NEOMED is focused on developing these re-growth processes to address the needs of our aging population.
A collaborative team of researchers, the Neurodegenerative Disease and Aging Research Focus Area focuses on fundamental and translational research in neurodegeneration and conditions linked to the aging of the brain. Our mission is to discover, develop and validate biomarkers and therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease and glaucoma.
