Ohio Dept. of Health to be led by NEOMED grad

Amy Stearns Acton, M.D., a 1990 graduate of Northeast Ohio Medical University, has been appointed by Gov. Mike DeWine to lead the Ohio Department of Health. The Columbus Dispatch noted that Gov. DeWine “praised Acton’s background of decades in public health and preventive medicine.”

The NEOMED graduate completed her internship and residency training in pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York City, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital/OSU; and a residency in preventive medicine at The Ohio State University. She holds an M.P.H. from The Ohio State University. Most recently, Dr. Acton was a community research and grants management officer at the Columbus Foundation.

The Dayton Daily News reported that Dr. Acton named infant mortality and youth homelessness as “top issues.”

The Youngstown native lives in the Columbus suburb of Bexley with her husband, Eric. Ohio Public Radio said that Dr. Acton is the first woman in the post.
