Medical Culture, Health Education & Career Development, & Student Mentored Research

Researchers from the humanities, behavioral sciences and the social sciences examine medical culture and education, health education, moral development and ethics and career development. Narrative medicine is an integral part of medical education at NEOMED and continues to be a critical theoretical and applied area of research for our humanities scholars and behavioral scientists. In addition to narrative medicine, specific research topics include, but are not limited to, clinical culture, history of medicine, clinical and specialty ethics, career adaptability, narratability, and intentionality, career construction theory and practice, career counseling, human vocational behavior, medical specialty choice, physician career development, medical interviewing and reflective practice.

Several medical and graduate studies students are involved in mentored population and public health research, as well as primary care research. Student research is an integral extension of the Department of Family and Community Medicine research, and includes extensive education, review, and oversight of student projects. Many of our students have disseminated their research in the form of posters, oral presentations, and publications.
