April 2022

The College of Medicine hosted a spring Celebration of Medical Education on Monday, April 25. 

Larry Hurtubise, Ph.D. (pictured below), Curriculum Specialist for the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University, started the day’s event with the plenary session, “Striving for Inclusive Teaching through Universal Design for Learning.” 

Following the plenary, the education innovation award faculty recipients, Janice McDaniel, M.D., Amy Lee, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., Kris Baughman, Ph.D., and L. Austin Fredrickson, M.D. (pictured below left to right), presented their projects and provided practical advice for those considering an application submission.   

The afternoon continued with concurrent workshops focused on writing effective assessment items, presented by Gustavo Patino, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies and Neurology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (pictured below), and an active learning workshop facilitated by Larry Hurtubise.   

A digital poster session highlighted the work of four education innovations as poster presenters Heather McEwen, MLIS, MS (pictured below to the left), Rebecca Fischbein, Ph.D., Kris Baughman, Ph.D., and Rachel Bracken, Ph.D. (pictured below to the right), provided snapshots of their projects.   

The day’s events concluded with an early evening plenary session, presented by Cynthia Ledford, M.D. and Susan Nofziger, M.D., on language that enhances clinical coaching and narrative assessments. 

The College of Medicine Office of Medical Education is looking forward to collaborating with the College of Pharmacy for a joint celebration event this upcoming fall on October 17.

The College of Medicine hosted its first inaugural Celebration of Medical Education event on Wednesday, Oct. 20.

Kent State University’s Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning and Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, Jennifer Marcinkiewicz, Ph.D. (pictured below), kicked off the afternoon event with her engaging and interactive presentation, “Opening the Front Door to Inclusive Teaching: Intentional Reflection and Practical Strategies.”

After the plenary the education innovation award faculty recipients, Rachel Bracken, Ph.D., Mariquita Belen, M.D., and Kristen Knepp, Ph.D. (pictured below right to left) presented their projects and offered practical advice to faculty considering an award application submission.

An in-person workshop followed in the Great Hall that tackled assessing hard to assess objectives and was facilitated by Sara Kosiba, Ph.D., and Heather McEwen, MLIS, MS (pictured below right to left).

The afternoon concluded with Katherine Walsh, M.D., FACP, Associate Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who presented via Zoom on clinical teaching tips related to observation, assessment, and feedback.
